Gestalt Switch
A Gestalt Switch is the moment when the same information suddenly reorganizes into an entirely different picture. Nothing new arrives—the facts stay exactly as they were—but the arrangement flips, and what you were looking at becomes something else.
The term comes from Gestalt psychology and the famous ambiguous images: the drawing that is either a duck or a rabbit, the vase that is also two faces. You cannot see both at once. And crucially, once you've seen the second interpretation, you can never fully return to a state of not seeing it.

Gut Reaction … or Infection?
On a Tuesday morning in July 1984, a 32-year-old doctor in Perth, Australia asked his lab technician to scrape the contents of two petri dishes into a beaker of beef broth—and then drank it like a shot.
The dishes were swarming with bacteria. Barry Marshall knew exactly what he was doing, and he did it because nothing else had worked.
For decades, the medical consensus on peptic ulcers had been settled and unanimous: they were caused by stress, spicy food, and excess stomach acid. The stomach was believed to be far too acidic for bacteria to survive in.
Then in 1979, a pathologist named Robin Warren noticed something odd under his microscope: corkscrew-shaped bacteria colonizing the stomach lining in roughly half the biopsies he examined—and inflammation was always present nearby. Other pathologists had seen them and dismissed them as contamination, because everyone knew bacteria couldn't live in the stomach.
Warren didn't dismiss them.
Marshall joined him in 1981, and together they studied biopsies from 100 patients. The pattern was overwhelming. Their 1984 Lancet paper reported the curved bacteria in 77% of gastric ulcer patients and 100% of duodenal ulcer patients.
The medical establishment was unmoved.
Marshall later described the reception bluntly: to gastroenterologists, suggesting a germ caused ulcers sounded like claiming the Earth was flat. He couldn't develop an animal model to prove causation. So he made himself the animal model. Following a baseline endoscopy confirming a healthy stomach lining, he drank the culture. Within days he had acute gastritis. A follow-up biopsy confirmed infection. He then cured himself with antibiotics.
Even that wasn't enough. Full acceptance took until the early 1990s, and the NIH didn't formally endorse antibiotic treatment for ulcers until 1994—a decade after Marshall's self-experiment.
In 2005, Marshall and Warren received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
