Cognitive Load

Cognitive Load theory describes the limited capacity of human working memory.

At any given moment, your brain can only actively hold and process a small number of new pieces of information—somewhere in the range of four to seven items, depending on the complexity. Push past that ceiling, and performance collapses.

The best systems, lessons, and instructions are the ones that respect the narrow bandwidth of human working memory, offloading what can be offloaded so the brain has room left for what actually matters.

STORY

Too Much Airplane … For One Man?

On October 30, 1935, at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, one of the most experienced test pilots in the United States climbed into the cockpit of the most advanced aircraft ever built for the Army Air Corps…

…and, within seconds of takeoff, was dead.

Major Ployer P. Hill was the Air Corps' Chief of Flight Testing, a man who had personally evaluated nearly sixty different aircraft over his career. The plane he was flying that day, Boeing's Model 299, had already stunned military brass during earlier trials—it could carry five times the required bomb load and fly nearly twice as far as competing designs.

The Model 299 climbed to roughly 300 feet, then suddenly stalled, tipped, and crashed in a fiery explosion in front of a crowd of Army officials and manufacturing executives. Hill and Boeing's chief test pilot, Leslie Tower, both died from their injuries.

The investigation found no mechanical failure. The cause was simpler, and far stranger:

Hill had forgotten to release the gust lock, a mechanism securing the plane's tail control surfaces. The aircraft demanded far more of a pilot than any before it—four engines to monitor, retractable landing gear, adjustable wing flaps, electric trim tabs, and constant-speed propellers requiring hydraulic regulation, all managed simultaneously by one person, from memory. One of the most capable pilots alive had simply run out of working memory.

A newspaper later called it "too much airplane for one man to fly."

Boeing initially lost the bomber contract. But a small group of test pilots believed the problem wasn't the plane—it was the demand being placed on a single human mind. Their solution was almost embarrassingly simple: a checklist. Every critical step for taxiing, takeoff, flight, and landing was written down in sequence, removing the need to hold it all in memory at once.

The fix worked.

Flying with checklists, pilots operated the aircraft for roughly 1.8 million miles without a single accident. The Army eventually ordered nearly 13,000 of the planes, redesignated the B-17 Flying Fortress, which went on to become one of the most significant bombers of World War II.
